What is a WMA file?

A WMA file is an audio file saved in the Advanced Systems Format (ASF) proprietary format developed by Microsoft. It contains Windows Media Audio and metadata objects such as the title, artist, album, and genre of the track. WMA files are similar to .MP3 files and primarily used for streaming music from the web.

  1. You can play a WMA on your Mac with Quicktime Player by doing the following: Download and install the Windows Media Components for QuickTime by Flip4Mac. To download it, go to the Microsoft Windows Media Components for QuickTimepage. In Quicktime Player, open the WMA file.
  2. Now you can play it as you would any other song. Some metadata is copied to the QuickTime file, and you can edit/add tags in iTunes. Remember to keep the original WMA files in place, as your reference.mov files still point to them. If you don't mind one more conversion step, you can then liberate your WMAs within iTunes.
  3. Click on Open File to navigate to the folder where your WMA files are kept, select the target files to load them to the player. After loading completes, these files will be displayed on the right panel playlist. Step 3: Set up related settings.
